Fertility and education premiums
نویسنده
چکیده
This study examines households’ fertility variations in response to expected permanent shifts in the return to education. Wage premiums measure the return to education because their long-run movements are driven by factors exogenous to the fertility process. The results indicate that high education parents’ fertility responds negatively to changes in the expected return to college and negatively to changes in the expected return to high school. On the other hand, the fertility of low education parents does not vary with changes to expected returns to education. These results can be consistently interpreted within a standard quality/quantity model of endogenous fertility. JEL classification: J13, N30

Risk premiums and certainty equivalents of loss-averse newsvendors of bounded utility
Loss-averse behavior makes the newsvendors avoid the losses more than seeking the probable gains as the losses have more psychological impact on the newsvendor than the gains. In economics and decision theory, the classical newsvendor models treat losses and gains equally likely, by disregarding the expected utility when the newsvendor is loss-averse. Moreover, the use of unbounded utility to m...
متن کاملLife Cycle Earnings and Wage Premiums
In this paper I use the Malmö Longitudinal Study and construct actual ageearnings profiles for the 1928 cohort of Malmö men. Real earnings for the highest educated men are found to have decreased significantly during the late 70s and early 80s. The emerging age-earnings profiles are rather similar to the approximated profiles by Mincer (1974). The same development is found for the wage premiums...

متن کاملA synthetic biosocial model of fertility transition: testing the relative contribution of embodied capital theory, changing cultural norms, and women's labor force participation.
This article presents a biosocial model of fertility decline, which integrates ecological-economic and informational-cultural hypotheses of fertility transition in a unified theoretical framework. The model is then applied to empirical data collected among 500 women from San Borja, Bolivia, a population undergoing fertility transition. Using a combination of event history analysis, multiple reg...
متن کاملHow female education reduces fertility: models and needed research.
Although the correlation between female education and fertility has been documented, the operators that link greater female education to lower fertility at either the individual or aggregate levels have not been specified or submitted to systematic empirical tests. Discovering which aspects of female education account for reduced fertility requires a refined conceptualization of the education-...
